Alar Tuul

Alar Tuul (b. 1982) is one of the most recognizable and distinctive artists among young Estonian authors. Tuul’s naive pictorial surfaces, reminiscent of Karel Appel or Jean-Michel Basquiat, have moved from individual details to increasingly larger generalizations over the years. The stick figures and ring-eyed creatures have survived, but individual scenes no longer form an entire composition, but are parts of larger panoramas. Emotion (color) has been replaced with calculation (line), the subconscious with clear motive, and from these views one can read thousands of stories and construct ever new worlds.

Tuul graduated from the Department of Painting and Drawings of the Tartu College of Art and the Department of Painting of the University of Tartu.
