Artrovert Gallery is hosting Kristel Schwede’s solo exhibition “Bittersweet and Other Modes of Being” until 11th of April 2026.
The exhibition brings together Schwede’s photographs and paintings inspired by her time on the coast of Southern France. Through rich colour treatment and a playful engagement with form, the works reflect on the contradictory nature of life — its simultaneous sweetness and bitterness — as experienced through travel, distance, and cultural displacement.
For Schwede, travel is not merely movement through space but a journey inward: a form of therapy, disconnection, and a search for creative freedom. The exhibition explores how unfamiliar environments and cultural layers can shift perception, transforming everyday reality into something almost mythical.
Schwede is an artist, cultural journalist, publisher, and curator (Positiiv magazine and gallery). Her practice centres on existential questions, the celebration of everyday life, and the subtle space between individual and collaborative creation. She has held thirteen solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows, and her works are included in private collections in Estonia, Germany, and France.
