Britta Benno

Britta Benno (b. 1984) is a drawing and printmaking artist living in Tallinn.

Her work is created through an open and trusting process that combines drawing, painting and printmaking. At the centre of her creative process is the tension between mark and line, and an exploration of the point at which they become an image.

She works in the margins where mixed media opens up new possibilities. Her process is slow and layered, adding textures and allowing translucent layers to glow against brown canvas or white paper. She wants the works to carry a sense of lightness and unexpected combinations, in dialogue with established techniques.

She is interested in the fragility of humans and the environment through (conceptual) landscapes, admiring ruins, dreamlike productions and fantastic creatures. Her artworks has been exhibited throughout in Europe, also in Australia and Canada.

Britta Benno is the Director of the Tallinn Print Triennial. She serves as a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at the Estonian Academy of Arts. In 2023, Benno completed her doctoral thesis, Thinking in Layers, in Worlding in Layers: Posthumanist Landscapes in the Expanded Field of Printmaking and Drawing.
